This week middleware maker Faceware is taking the wraps off Faceware Interactive, a new division of the company that aims to create tech devs can use to create digital characters which can interact with real, live people in real, live time.
For game developers, this latest step forward in the “face race” is notable because Faceware Interactive’s goal is to advance the state of tech used to transpose the movements of a person’s face onto a virtual character in a game in real time.
However, it’s important to note that Faceware has been overlaying actors’ performances on digital characters in real time since it launched its Live real-time mocap software in 2014. Faceware Interactive is built specifically to focus on that type of tech, and adapt it for use to a broad variety of uses.
“Faceware formed this new division to advance that technology, and to take it into new directions, such as VR, and markets, such as theme parks, shopping malls and live events,” a company representative told Gamasutra via email.
That VR bit encompasses VR game development, of course, and the tech Faceware Interactive is working on has already been used in the development of VR games like Grace [pictured] and Here They Lie VR.
